Bjarnheiður Hallsdóttir Managing Director (and owner)
Bjarnheiður studied Tourism Management at the FH München and is the co-founding member of Katla Travel. Heida, as she is called, has also worked in various other areas of tourism such as a teacher at the University of Iceland and the Kópavogur School of Tourism as well as holding lectures at various events around the topic “tourism”. The passion for her job goes so far that she lists tourism as her hobby – followed by exercising, hiking, choir singing and swimming in the ocean. She loves all parts of Iceland, particularly lying by the sea and glaciers views.
Pétur Óskarsson Managing Director (and owner)
Pétur was working for Icelandair in 1986 as a tour guide in the Zillertal in Tyrol and in Kaiserwinkel Walchsee. Later he studied Marketing Management at the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg and Tourism Management at the FH München where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Pétur is a co-founder of Katla Travel GmbH in Munich where he worked from 1997-2002 as Managing Director until he moved back to his homeland, Iceland. Since 2003 he has been the Managing Director of Katla DMI. In addition to tourism he has a number of interests, such as politics, nature and outdoor activities – and the latter he prefers doing with his children. His favorite place in Iceland could not be more secluded; Trékyllisvík in the Westfjords.
Anna Vilborg Ívarsdóttir Business Development Manager
Anna has also studied Tourism Management at the University of Applied Sciences Munich and began working with Katla Travel in 1998 while still studying. After graduating, she took over co-management of Katla Travel until taking a family leave in 2003, moving from Munich to Hamburg and then Hague in the Netherlands. This time she also used to acquire an MBA degree and worked at various smaller projects. In 2012, Anna returned to Iceland, where since 2013 she rejoined the team of Katla DMI. In her spare time she enjoys time with her family, some sports, and studies homeopathy passionately. When asked about her favorite place in Iceland, she replies without hesitation “The South Coast”.
Brynjar Óskarsson IT-Manager
Brynjar has a degree in computer science from the University of Iceland. He has worked full time in the IT field for Katla DMI since 2006. He loves all places in Iceland that allow him to practice his biggest hobby, paragliding. In addition, he plays the trombone and is a member of a marching band.
Ólöf can look back on over 30 years of experience in the tourism industry, in accounting for over 25 years. In the spring of 2008, she joined Katla DMI and has since then been Manager of finance and accounting for the Katla group. Her spare time she loves to spend with her grandchildren and reading. She also appreciates good food. Ólöf feels especially connected to the region of Mývatn in North-Iceland, where she was born and raised.
Ramona Pittroff Product Manager Groups
Ramona first worked in the film industry in Germany for the DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft). In 1996 she switched saddles and started training in tourism. After graduating as a travel agent she worked at a Berlin bus tour until the year 2003 when she moved to Iceland and joined the team of Katla DMI. She loves almost any kind of outdoor activity, traveling and photography. Ramona refuses to choose a favorite place in Iceland but for her “the more remote and lonely, the better” whether in the highlands, the Westfjords or other regions of the countryside.
Sonja Arna Chan Social Media Coordinator Sonja is a Kindergarten- and Primary school teacher. She worked as a teacher in a Kindergarten for many years. Sonja went back to school in 2009 and studied Graphic Media Design. The year 2016 Sonja changed her work form and joined the team of Katla DMI. In her spare time, she wants to be with her family. She also has a family in Malaysia and tries to visit them as often as she can. Her favourite place in Iceland is Þingvellir, National Park.

It began in 1997 in Munich, as Pétur Óskarsson and Bjarnheiður Hallsdóttir, while studying Tourism Management in Munich, founded the tour operator company “Katla Travel GmbH”. Under the slogan “Island Individuell / Iceland Individually” they organized and sold tailor made group and individual packages. In cooperation with Neckermann Reisen, Katla Travel offered a number of charter flights that made travelling to Iceland more affordable than ever before and allowing a more flexible product design.
Viator – Holiday Home Rental
In 2002, the holiday home rental and Katla’s sister company “Viator” was founded in Reykjavík. So far, cottages had only to a limited extent been available for tourist rental in Iceland, but the demand had increased noticeable. With Viator the door opened up for Icelandic house and cottage owners to the tourist rental market. The idea to rent holiday homes that were unused large part of the year to foreign guests fell on fertile ground.
Katla DMI – Iceland Incoming
In 2003, the operation of Katla Travel for incoming travelers spun off and Katla DMI in Reykjavík was founded. Today, both companies operate completely independently as separate companies. Katla Travel’s main focus are individual guests whereas Katla DMI serves as an incoming agency for tour operators of German-speaking guests – both for self-traveling guests and for groups of all kinds.
The number of employees of the Katla Group has grown in these 17 years, from 2 to 20. The staff is primarily from the field of tourism and / or have a strong connection to Iceland and Germany.
Holiday Homes investments
In recent years, the Katla Group has invested in its own holiday homes to strengthen its offer. The group attaches great importance to the quality of the houses themselves and all equipment, with emphasis on promoting Icelandic design. Today there are 5 holiday homes owned by the group, one in each part of Iceland.
Katla DMI is always looking for innovations and new challenges in order to strengthen its market position. Thus, recently the attention has been focused more on the product ranges meetings, conferences, incentives and events.
